You will drive internal and external communications, leading a team to ensure all communications convey consistent, professional and clear messages. Engaging with a range of stakeholders including current and prospective students, industry partners, colleagues and decision-makers, you’ll enhance the College’s reputation and ensure it is regarded as a leading UK institution renowned for employability, creativity, entrepreneurship and thought-leadership.

Key responsibilities:

Internal communications

  • Develop and lead on the implementation of a comprehensive strategic communications plan

  • Develop and implement communications processes to enable staff across the College to effectively communicate with current students

  • Monitor and continuously improve our communications to current students

  • Plan, edit or write content for a variety of internal communications, such as the staff intranet, social media, newsletters and emails

  • Work with colleagues and students across the College to build and tell compelling stories

  • Lead communications for internal events including promoting events to current students and driving attendance through effective comms planning

  • Create and disseminate guidelines to champion best practice

  • Create comms plans for the collection of student feedback, including managing a yearly campaign for the National Student Survey (NSS)

External communications

  • Work closely with the External Relations department to develop the College’s brand narrative

  • Manage and creatively use social media to communicate with the College’s stakeholders

  • Identify opportunities to enter industry and sector awards

  • Profile the work of students, alumni, academics and staff to build our reputation

  • Review and input into external communications such as presentations, brochures, marketing campaigns, videos and the website

  • Identify and anticipate issues which may impact Pearson College London and ensure that crisis management plans are in place to respond to risks to its operations and reputation

  • Manage the Pearson College London blog, engaging with students, alumni, academics and partners to create content


  • Lead the development of a PR and media relations service for Pearson College London

  • Manage the writing of media releases, news articles and creative copy, tailoring it for specific audiences and media

  • Build external relationships with key strategic partners including journalists, publications and employer organisations

  • Generate PR that integrates and supports our marketing campaigns and is planned around key student recruitment periods


  • Manage the Pearson College London communications budget, directing the work of external suppliers, including specialist agencies, and ensuring quality and return on investment

  • Monitor the effectiveness of the communications and make and implement recommendations to improve the impact of Pearson College London’s communications

  • Line management of a team

  • Attend internal and external meetings and training as required

  • Ensure that we are tracking our reputation, media coverage and corporate communications successes and that we are regularly reporting these to the right people internally

Knowledge, Skills and Attitude Required


  • A broad knowledge and experience of communications

  • A strong strategist, with the ability to react to changes in the internal and external environment

  • Strong copywriting and editing skills

  • Experience of managing budgets

  • Experience of line managing a team of writers and contributors/general content producers

  • Demonstrable understanding of internal communications, including communications planning and the management of brand and visual identity

  • Flawless written English and strong judgement of style and tone

  • Good political awareness of the context within which Pearson College London operates and its institutional objectives and strategies

  • Excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work on several projects, all with tight deadlines

  • Flexible approach and willingness to be involved in a range of projects


  • Experience in the HE sector

  • Experience of journalism or writing in a professional capacity

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a small and dynamic team. The role has a broad scope, covering both internal and external communications, and would suit someone who thrives on variety, is creative and has a can-do attitude. You will be managing a small team, including supporting the development of a degree apprentice, and so an ability to lead, inspire and develop others is a must.
